Not working yourself to death

Postby freebird » Thu Dec 01, 2011 6:43 am

A friend of mine did a 'how to make money' poll online yesterday (on facebook), she was upset with my answers of telling her multiple streams. I do not know a single person who does not have at least two ways to make money online, most freelancers know this. Her answer was "I can just work extra", she does not get that working herself to death is not the key to having a working business model that actually works.

There are a lot of people like that, unfortunately. And they are constantly scrambling for new work because they have no backup so they end up competing on price.

I know a lot of people who work two or three jobs just to make extra income. Actually it's their own plan and it's not for us to lecture them what a working business model should be. Good examples are working students who work part time on different jobs.

I have found that my style has been to focus hard on becoming really proficient at mastering one stream so that it becomes easy, then I move on to learning something new to add. So far, so good.

Libby, I think that you have a very smart strategy and one that I have been trying to put into place. I am working on having multiple streams of income and mastering one until it becomes second nature will make all others easier to manage.

Unless you're employed by a real-world company that has legit telecommute opportunities, it's unrealistic to expect that you can earn an impressive income at home from a sole source. This isn't to say that you need to get involved with more projects than you can count; just focus on the quality ones.
