Should You Post Your Prices On Your Website

Postby Carolyn » Fri Nov 11, 2011 9:12 am

I've read arguments supporting both sides of this issue. Those in favor of showing prices say that it takes a step out of the purchase process and so sales are better. Those not in favor say that they want customers to contact them for pricing so they can establish a relationship with prospective customers. I can see benefits to both ways. If you have a freelance website, I'd be interested in hearing your take on this.

I don't have a website for my freelance work but I can definitely see both sides. If you offer a service that is sort of 'one size fits all' then I guess it's a good idea to give prices. If it's really a more personal service, like articles that may vary in subject, then I think it's better to establish a relationship first and negotiate.

I'm for posting prices upfront. It lets the client know right away what they can expect to budget for if they intend on hiring you. Most freelancers I've seen advertise their prices, and it only seems to help their business.

I think about posting my price for the work that I love doing for the clients. Portfolios needed to be included in my own website so that they will see my quality of work and it helps them think that my price is reasonable for the job I do.

I think posting prices is the right way to go. To me, it sends the message that you are right up front about things and that you would be good to do business with.

If you end up not doing this you are going to be constantly answering inquires as to what your prices are. Personally mine are listed after going through this battle (and its not a fun one). The only thing I deal with now are orders and that is never a bad thing.

Thanks for the input. I think that I'm going to go with posting my prices. I was hesitant thinking it might discourage potential clients from hiring me. But if I really think about it, I do have to set minimums and if people aren't prepared to pay, I probably don't want to write for them anyway.

I don't post prices because every job is different. There are topics I can write easily, so I ease up on the price with those. I also enjoy doing them. On the other hand, other jobs require hours of research and are difficult to write. My method is to quote prices after a client has given me a description and feel for the job. This way has worked for my needs.

I really believe that posting your prices is the best way to go. When I first built my website, I didn't post my prices and I would a lot of people contacting just to find out what my prices were. In the old days you could add that user to a list and send them out sales information etc.. No of course that is considered as unethical.
