Freelance Writing from a Pastime to a Lucrative Career

My foray into the world of freelance writing was not sudden. It had been on my mind for quite some time and my affair with freelance writing started during college days, when I wrote a few research articles and edited my college magazine. Back then, I was not sure that I would make it a career one day, but I understood very clearly that I had a passion for researching and writing and developing my own content, which is why my friends always relied on me for project report writing. But, after completion of my studies and taking my first job, writing took a backseat. Though, in between I was in touch with my first love (writing) through movie reviews and writing short stories, but nothing great happened in my love story.

Years later, when the responsibility of raising my 2 lovely kids was upon me, I thought would it be a nice idea to quit my job and tend to my kids and guide them to a successful career like my mother did years back. However, I did not take the idea of being a homemaker very kindly. Suddenly, I started my search with some of the finest writing portals. I tried and failed several times. Once, I got a lucrative project, but due to a recession that project was shelved and dreams were shattered once again. I did hang in there for quite some time though. Finally, I started getting better offers from different content writing portals. Since then, there has been no looking back.

In this field you can earn as much as you want and your success is only be limited by your imagination. But, only on one condition; never give up. There are certain things that you need to keep in mind, before venturing into the freelance writing business:

  • Start saving some money for the future. Like I said, you need to wait for some good projects, so you need money to keep going.
  • Start networking with different people to get more visibility.
  • Work on your presentation skills as well as niche skills required to carry out the job effectively. For this, the best thing is to start investing one hour daily for sharpening and honing new skills. It is like an investment that will fetch you greater ROI in future.
  • Start the freelance venture as a part time job along with your day job. This way, you will get accustomed to the kind of work and generate some consistent income as well.
  • Last but not the least; create a personal vision board for yourself. You need to gauge your success.
