The Future of Freelancing

If you are a freelancer like me, you are probably wondering what the future holds for you. I started freelance writing years ago, but I have only recently come to notice that the rates have gone down significantly since then. This makes me think: is this really all I'll be able to make from freelancing from now on? And it doesn't help that more and more freelancers are jumping onto the bandwagon by the day, either, adding onto the slew of competitors that already exists out there. However, after much thought, I have decided what the future really holds for us freelancers. In a nutshell, the future holds what we make of it.

The Upside to Low Rates

Yes, rates are lower for freelancers nowadays, but we also have to consider the fact that the Internet has a much higher demand for various kinds of freelance work now, too - much more compared to when I started out. Although it may be true that the last few years have thrown nothing but lower rates my way in my field of freelance writing, they are still falling the same way they did decades ago.

The truth is: there will always be clients who will hope to hire freelancers for next to nothing and there will also always be freelancers who won't mind getting paid next to nothing as long as they get some money and get to build their portfolios in the process. These things won't change.

What has changed, though, is the demand for various kinds of freelance work online. The demand is much higher now, which means that there are more low-paying jobs available now, as well. This, in turn, means that the high-paying jobs are actually still there; they are just buried under the amount of low-paying jobs. What you have to do is sift through the low-paying ones and find work that pays well - work that you deserve.

Freelance Bid Sites

The latest freelancing phenomenon online are bid sites. Now, although these sites might drive freelance rates down sometimes, you don't have to worry too much because they won't take up the whole freelance market. A lot of clients out there have already been burned because of these websites and have since then sworn of them, while other clients aren't even interested at looking at these sites to begin with because they want stellar services as opposed to cheap services.

Remember: nobody can force you to work on a bid site. So, as long as you put some time and effort into proper marketing, you will be able to find a lot of high-paying jobs elsewhere.

Freelance Competition

More and more people are now ditching their eight-hour jobs to freelance - mostly because of the less-than-ideal job markets nowadays. Naturally, this means that more companies will be looking into hiring freelancers for various jobs, as well, like writing or designing. Don't be afraid of this.

In general, more small businesses are popping up left and right and this can be a great thing for freelancers. See, whenever somebody starts up a business - be it in the dry-cleaning or freelance designing business - he will need help. No matter what the business may be, the owner will not be able to get things done alone. And, since new business owners can hardly ever afford full-time creatives and designers in the beginning, they will mostly likely look into hiring freelancers first.

The Future for Freelancers

In a nutshell, you are sure to see more opportunities for work in the future as a freelancer. However, you will also have to dig deep to find them. This means that you will have to avoid bad gigs and try to promote yourself properly. You will also need to invest a lot of your time in order to get good money out of the deal; but hey, nobody promised that freelancing was going to be a joyride, right?

Do not be scared of what the future holds. It simply represents more freelancing opportunities that you haven't reached yet.

I agree with you Marc. If anything I think there will be a greater need for us freelancers in the future than there is now. Now whether we get paid a decent wage is still up for debate.
